There are a variety of decisions that need to be made to have a prosperous dental practice.    Most of us understand instinctively that some of these decisions can be more easily shared with others, and some must be reserved for ourselves in the name of professional autonomy.    Here, you can play around and "think with your mouse" by dragging the various decisions around and placing them at the organizational level where you think they best belong!

DENTISTS:  Choose Dentists, assign patients, schedules, and duties; and determine their compensation.

 

HYGIENISTS:  Choose Hygienists, assign their patients, schedules, and duties; and determine their compensation.

 

STAFF:  Choose Staff, assign their schedules and duties, and determine their compensation.

 

LABS:  Choose Labs and assign cases.

 

SUPPLIES:  Choose and inventory dental supplies.

 

GENERAL OFFICE:   Choose utilities, telephone, office supplies, internet, etc.

 

GOODWILL:  Ownership of patient records and goodwill, choose practice name.

 

ADVERTISING:  Select advertising materials and choose local advertising.

 

LOCATION:  Select practice location and facilities, and be responsible for rent.

 

OPERATIONS MGMT:  Choose office systems, train staff, monitor, and ensure performance.

 

CE – SIX PILLARS:  Arrange continuing education programs, including transportation and lodging.

 

EQUIPMENT:  Select, install and maintain dental equipment, office equipment, computer systems, leasehold improvements, build-outs, and other “tangible” assets. 

 

BUILDING FUND:  Pool net earnings for sale to outside investors.

 

QUALITY ASSURANCE:  Responsibility for evaluating and maintaining quality control.

 

SPECIALISTS:  Choose and refer to specialists.

 

FEES:  Determining fees, including participation in PPO or HMO plans.
